Why we built this
Moving home is one of the biggest decisions you'll make. We think you deserve to make it with your eyes open.
When we were looking for somewhere new to live, we did what everyone does — scrolled through property listings, drove around neighbourhoods, asked friends. But the one thing we couldn't easily find was the kind of information that actually matters when you're committing to a place.
Is it safe? Will it flood? Are the schools any good? Can I work from home without the internet dropping? How clean is the air? Are the energy bills going to be through the roof?
All of this information exists. The government publishes it. But it's scattered across half a dozen different websites, each with its own format and its own quirks. You'd need an afternoon and a lot of patience to piece it all together.
So we built Good To Move to do that work for you.
You type in a postcode, and we pull together everything we can find from official government sources. Crime figures, flood risk, broadband speeds, nearby schools, air quality, and energy ratings — all in one place, all in plain English.
How we handle the data
We're careful about how we present information. It's easy to look at a crime number and panic, or see a flood zone boundary and assume the worst. But the reality is usually more nuanced than that.
A neighbourhood with a high crime count might simply have a busy high street or better policing. A flood zone boundary from twenty years ago might not reflect the drainage improvements made since. We try to give you context alongside the numbers, so you can draw your own conclusions.
We don't add opinion. We don't score areas. We don't tell you where to live. We just show you what the official records say, as clearly as we can.
Where the information comes from
Everything we show you comes from official UK government bodies:
- Police.uk — Street-level crime reports
- Environment Agency — Flood warnings and risk zones
- Ofcom — Broadband speed measurements
- Get Information About Schools — School details and Ofsted ratings
- DEFRA — Air quality monitoring
- EPC Register — Energy performance certificates
